“When a garden’s kept proper, all weeded and neat, that chases the wild away. But when it’s left alone, for nature, who knows what secret things’d grow there…”
This year’s winter production at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake is “The Secret Garden“ based on the childrens’ classic by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Using themes from the story Cumbria Printmakers have challenged themselves to produce work interpreting the play in visual form, sometimes obviously, sometimes more abstractly, with themes of secrecy, hope and re-birth.
See our exhibition in the Friend’s Gallery on the first floor.
The theatre also has two cafes including one overlooking the lake and is en-route to famous view points and a monument to Ruskin on Friar’s Crag and Calf Close Bay; well worth the short walk from Keswick town centre.
Eight of our members will be at this event in the village of Ravenglass – the only coastal village in the UNESCO World Heritage site, Lake District National Park. There will be a selection of beautiful work , in a wide variety of techniques, to suit all pockets; from framed originals to handmade cards and smaller gifts. There is a lot to see in this quiet corner of the Lake District and this weekend the scenic Ravenglass to Eskdale miniature railway is also offering free mince pies on their trips on the little train known as La’al Ratty.
A joint exhibition of Cumbria Printmakers and Cumbria Sculptors, supported by the Wordsworth Trust who will be using poetry to relate to the images.
This exhibition is only runs for a week, so you don’t have much time to see it…. Opening at 10am on Sunday 15th October with a poetry reading organised by the Wordsworth Trust from 4-6pm.
There will be a sculptor and printmaker there to talk to every day, find out about techniques, watch demonstrations and read the extensive methods and motivations folder.
An unusual venture in the Lakeland village of Grasmere, sure to have something to appeal to everyone. It would be lovely to see you there!
We will be working in conjunction with Cumbria Sculptors and The Wordsworth Trust to hang an exhibition in Grasmere Hall. More details to follow, but the show will run from Sunday 15th Oct – 22nd Oct 2017.

Cumbria Printmakers are exhibiting in the Great Barn at Dalemain Historical House near Penrith during C-Art. Seventeen members of the group will be showing new work, ranging from screen prints to lino and wood cuts, monoprints and etchings and even some less well-known techniques. The range of work will be exciting and original, artists will be available to discuss work every day and there are printmaking demonstrations. Workshops on monoprint and screen printing will take place each Sunday afternoon, these need to be pre-booked as spaces are limited.
The exhibition runs from Saturday 12th to Sunday 27th September and is open from 10.30 to 5.00 every day. The beautiful gardens and house are also open during the week and the gardens are open at a reduced rate on a Friday and Saturday. Beatrice Hasell-McCosh is also exhibiting at the house, making this one of the largest groups of artists on the C-Art trail. After browsing and buying artwork and plants the cosy and welcoming coffee shop is literally the icing on the (very delicious homemade) cake!
Cumbria Printmakers are taking part for the first time in the 20:20 Print Exchange run by Hotbed Press. The 20:20 refers to the size of the prints, which are 20cm x 20cm and each artist has to produce an edition of 25 prints which are then swapped with other workshops.
This years 20:20 has attracted a large number of artists from many workshops across the UK, Ireland and further afield and we are excited to have Islensk Grafik in Reykjavik, Iceland as a guest international workshop this year.
There are 43 print workshops and printmaking groups taking part and approximately 500 artists, with a good mix of experienced workshops and new workshops to the exchange. Altogether that totals around 12,500 prints. Hotbed have a new 20:20 website which they will be adding to and updating from time to time linking to each Printshops website so that everyone can see each other and get an overview of who is taking part. When it is running it will be posted on here.
The 20:20 On Tour:
Venues for the 20:20 tour in 2016 start with Neo:Artists Gallery in Bolton in January and move on to West Yorkshire Print Workshop in February-March before heading further afield on a national tour.
Cumbria Printmakers will receive a selection of prints which will form a forthcoming exhibition in November 2015.
We’re delighted to announce the first fundraising exhibition for Cumbria Printmakers. Members are invited to submit up to three works. There will also be a fundraising auction shortly afterwards.
